Real life during navigation

We have divided this document into two main sections: In the first we refer to Life on board, and we give you some general advice that will help you to make your life more comfortable on the boat. We also go a little deeper into the descriptions and advice referred to inside the sailboat and also and finally we talk about everything related to life on deck. In the second part of the document we introduce some good seamanship tips, paying special attention to how we should act when dealing with other boats. We hope to help you quickly enter our world of sea and that you can enjoy all this with maximum comfort.

Life on board: General.

Rules of Conduct: We will live several people in a reduced space for several days, so respect for others and understanding are fundamental to the success of the cruise. A good dose of joy and good humor will help a lot. In any case I already advance here that the coexistence away from what some presuppose, is usually one of the best aspects of the week and often becomes an opportunity to meet new people and have fun and in a few cases, forge new friendships.

Essential requirements on a ship are order and cleanliness, both inside (personal effects in common spaces, scouring pending to do …) and on deck (creams, towels, cameras …), although we will insist later.

Things to know:

We must keep in mind that the resources on a ship are

Limited. Especially in relation to the energy of batteries and fresh water. Lights lit in empty staterooms, letting fresh water run into the sink by brushing our teeth or scrubbing us will force us to depend on the port services we do not always have. We have to take into account that outside the port we can not shower every day or wash our hair, or wash our clothes, etc, unless we have to go to refuel water to port.

The boat operates at 12 volts, like cars and when we are at berth we have 220 volts. Therefore we will not be able to use hair dryers unless we are in port. Mobile phones can be charged if we have a car cigarette lighter socket or when we are in port.

Near the coast we will have coverage in the mobile many times, but not during the crossing of the peninsula to the islands.

The boat moves and sometimes a lot, you have to be careful with all the things that can fall, Knives, cans, bottles … .. are utensils that can hurt us and objects we can lose … sunglasses, books, lighters, cutlery…. Are many of the things you can find diving in an anchorage.

On the ships, any noise is enlarged. As much as possible, doors should be avoided, the use of electric pumps and any noise especially at night and during siesta time. And if there is doubt as to how you should act in any other circumstance, always consult with the employer.

It is customary to organize “guards” of kitchen, scrubbing and cleaning, shifting these tasks in turn.

Before starting to sail, it is a prerequisite to put the boat “a son de mar”, which consists of putting everything in its place, to avoid falls and breaks, to close all the cabinets with their closing buttons, to close all ventilation holes, etc. On deck everything will be well secured without utensils, towels, creams, etc. that can fall.

It is advisable, especially while sailing, to wear nautical shoes, layers or similar on deck, to avoid blows on the fingers, especially when performing maneuvers. In summer, a few sneakers are an excellent substitute for nautical ones.

When we come from the beach, with sand on feet, towels, baskets … we will remove it before boarding. To keep the feeling of cleanliness and to find ourselves in a pleasant and comfortable place it is necessary to be able to be barefoot when we find ourselves in an anchorage without “sticking” dirt on our feet. The beach sand makes us lose that sense of cleanliness and scratches the floors both on the deck and the interior, so we must keep it away from the boat at all costs.

Also, we will avoid getting wet inside to prevent possible slips. We will not sit with the wet suit in the seats and in the beds of the boat or we will walk dripping and wetting the floor of the interior of the ship. If we forgot a towel, we will ask someone who is dry to bring it to us.

As we have already pointed out, order is also important on the deck, a gust of wind can blow our towels, t-shirts … and an unwelcome wave can drown our mobile.

Pay particular attention to mobiles, which have a great predisposition to get wet or fall into the water.

When using protective creams, we will always do it on a towel, otherwise we will not convert the cover to a skating rink.

When entering port the deck must be as clear as possible to facilitate the mooring maneuvers. We will be attentive and follow the employer’s instructions.

In terms of minimum maintenance standards of the boat, we ask that you do not smoke inside the boat or in the vicinity of the auxiliary boat, because it has the fuel tank in the air and could also be punctured with a burning of a butt. Please also use the sofas, beds, etc … the interior of the boat is always made with dry clothes. As for cabinet doors and rooms, they should always be kept fully open (secured with their hook on the back) or completely closed. Do not open doors because with the movement of the waves can generate blows and annoying noises.

Sailing ships sail slowly, so keep this in mind when planning our itinerary. Besides, in the sea you know when you leave but not when you will arrive.

The cruising speed of our sailboat can be 6 to 7 knots, which are about 10 to 12 km / hour. You see that a person jogging will go faster than a sailboat. As an example, bearing in mind that the conditions of wind and sea can influence a lot, from Barcelona to Ibiza or Formentera it can take between 22 and 26 hours of navigation and between the Escala and menorca, between 20 and 22 hours.

In a boat nothing works with violence, be delicate with the pumps of the bathrooms, the doors, etc and take care of the boat as if it were yours. If something does not work as expected, do not force it, check with the employer.

Life inside:

As we have already said an essential requirement in sailboats is the order, both inside (personal effects in common spaces, scrubbing to do …) and on deck (creams, towels, cameras …). In navigation it is advisable to put every thing in its place, to avoid falls and breaks.

The toilets are very delicate and it is very easy to jam them. There is a saying that says “Do not throw anything that you have not eaten previously”. And that includes paper. The sink has a trash where we must deposit it. THE PAPER NEVER TAKE IT TO THE TOILET. In addition, in a boat nothing works with violence, is delicate with the bombs of the baths, the doors, etc and takes care of the boat as if it were yours. If something does not work as expected, do not force it, check with the employer.

Special attention must be paid in the kitchen:

We will never cook in a bathing suit.
We will use high pots to heat liquids.
We will warn the “cook” if a wave approaches, even if we are in a quiet cove (a watercraft that passes near the boat, can produce a sufficient wave, to spill what we are cooking).
We will never leave anything in the fire unattended.
Special care with children
Life on deck:

We will not wear footwear with black rubber soles and we will avoid getting on board boats or sailboats with street shoes, it is advisable to wear t-shirts or similar on deck, to avoid blows on the fingers, especially when performing maneuvers.
When we come from the beach, with sand in feet, towels … we will remove it before entering. Also, we will avoid getting wet inside to prevent possible slips.
By cover always we will move by keeping a hand in the guards or any fixed element, like the rigging, never we will hold of a sheet or any other corporal since they can yield.
Also important is certain order on deck, a gust of wind can blow our towels, t-shirts … and an unwelcome wave can drown our mobile
If we use protective creams, we will always do it on a towel, otherwise we will turn the deck into a skating rink.
When entering the port the deck must be as clear as possible to facilitate mooring maneuvers and follow the instructions of the skipper.
Most important special care:

For some it will be obvious, but I can not resist to remember the following:

DO NOT CAUSE THE BATH, so do not throw paper, cotton, intimate hygiene items, etc. Since it will end up jamming the toilet and force us to moor in port until repairing the fault. The toilet is an important element on board, we will follow the instructions on its use and we will not hesitate to call the master if we can not “empty” it, as a general rule, we will never force the mechanism or throw anything that has not previously happened. stomach.
CONTROL WATER CONSUMPTION, is a boat is scarce and very precious. It is necessary to be moderate in the consumption of fresh water, it is preferable to consume it with. It is necessary to be moderate in the consumption of fresh water, it is preferable to consume it in moderation, than to have to enter port to refuel, a simple shower without closing the tap believing that these in your house will end with the tanks … and in the sea there is much Water … but it is salty, your employer will teach you how to save water. If you have to enter port to refuel, usually the water service is very low cost and can be at noon for a few hours to refuel and shop, take a shower, etc.
We will always use mineral water for drinking and cooking, leaving the deposits for personal cleanliness and scrubbing. In addition the boat has a sea water faucet for the first rinse.
DO NOT RUN ELECTRICITY as you may encounter a problem in the middle of a hot air balloon frustrating your vacation days, do not completely waste the batteries as they usually spoil losing their ability to recover our boat is equipped with extra battery, which allows us a wide autonomy , However, we will not leave lights on and recharge our mobiles (with cigarette lighter socket) at noon. The pattern usually starts the engine to recharge the batteries 3 times a day to ensure a good load. Finally, the sailboat has a small inverter for 220V devices, but we can not use it except for logical uses (mobile phone chargers, laptops, etc.)
